Background and Partner Organisation

The Civil Peace Service (CPS) is a program for the prevention of violence and the promotion of peace in crisis and conflict regions. As a seconded professional in the CPS, you will be committed to partner organizations that are advocating for social justice, peace and the protection of human rights on the ground. The organizations are part of a national network of peace organizations and unite their efforts for sustainable and impactful social transformation.

Our partner organisation Trauma Center Cameroun (TCC) strengthens relationships between refugees, internally displaced people, and host communities, fostering spaces where peaceful coexistence can take root despite profound social, economic, and cultural tensions. Guided by a holistic, psychosocial approach, it reinforces resilience, supports mental well‑being, and enables constructive conflict transformation within the affected communities.

Since 1999, our partner organisation has been committed to the psychosocial, medical and legal well-being of people who have survived violence and torture. It has already given hope and concrete support to thousands of people from Cameroon and neighbouring countries. Their approach is holistic and interdisciplinary: Psychologists, doctors, lawyers and social workers collaborate closely to enhance resilience and social inclusion.

With its clear stance on human dignity, compassion, and social justice, our partner organisation provides an inspiring place where art therapists can meaningfully and effectively contribute their expertise. Art therapy opens up new pathways for expression, especially for people who find it difficult to express their thoughts, wishes, or fears in words. It fosters empathy and mutual understanding, strengthens social bonds, and promotes more peaceful coexistence between refugees, internally displaced people, and host communities.

The duty station is Bertoua – this is where our partner organisation TCC is working on its project. Their main office is in Yaoundé. Before taking on your responsibilities in Bertoua, you will undertake an onboarding period in Yaoundé to become familiar with the work processes and the team.

Your Responsibilities

Artistic and creative practices are to be integrated as a sustained element of psychosocial support, social cohesion, and the transformation of civil conflicts within TCC’s work. The emphasis lies on creating inclusive spaces for expression and dialogue, where individuals and communities can collectively re‑shape personal experiences and shared narratives. As an international professional, you will work with the team to shape this approach, contribute to its joint elaboration, and support the professional growth of your colleagues. In Bertoua, you will work alongside an interdisciplinary team of psychologists, facilitators, and other specialists to co‑design activities, with a focus on the following tasks:

• Designing and facilitating theoretical and practical training on the foundations, tools, and approaches of art therapy for the TCC team
• Co‑creating and providing teaching and training materials that strengthen the team’s capacity to apply creative and art‑therapeutic methods independently
• Engaging in counselling and collegial consultation to jointly reflect on and shape the planning and implementation of art‑therapy activities
• Using artistic and dialogue‑oriented formats together with colleagues to sensitively address tensions, stigmatisation, and conflict dynamics, and to open constructive perspectives
• Sharing knowledge dialogically and co‑evolving creative methods with the team, thereby contributing to the long‑term autonomy of TCC and the communities
• Shaping artistic and creative spaces for expression where challenging experiences, resilience processes, and collective narratives can be explored together (e.g. exhibitions, theatre, facilitated exchange formats)

Your Profile

We warmly welcome applications from art therapists who are eager to grow alongside a dedicated team, exchange perspectives, and engage in mutual learning. You bring:

• A relevant university degree (minimum Bachelor’s level) in Art Therapy, Psychology, Social Sciences, or a closely related field
• Experience applying art‑therapeutic methods in intercultural and sensitive contexts
• Strong French language skills (working language)
• Enjoyment of teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Strong interpersonal abilities that support empathy, active listening, and trust‑building communication
• High analytical sensitivity to social, cultural, and psychosocial contexts
• An advantage would be familiarity with psychosocial dynamics, vulnerabilities and protective factors, as well as peace‑building processes and individual and collective resilience in contexts of flight and displacement
• We are looking for internationally experienced candidates. For this role, a minimum of 5 years proven working/ living experience outside of Cameroon is required
